3 Substantial Tips for Authors with On-progress Trilogy and Series Books

Being an author is like living in both heaven and hell. There are always pros and cons, no in between. Everything must be balanced in order to produce a well-written output. To be a remarkable author, one needs to step up their games and watch out for the advantages and disadvantages of every move that he or she makes. An author’s journey to writing a successful trilogy or series is similar to a person walking in a field full of landmines, there are things that will caught you off guard and make you struggle. The most essential method authors must do is to harness their talent in writing and utilize it in order to create and give life to stories with immeasurable greatness.

Trilogy is the term used to define a set of three stories that are linked to one another. In literature, it somehow refers to three books in which the following two are the continuation of the first one. Thus, each one is a piece of another that will make a perfect whole. There are various trilogy books that are being patronized by readers of different ages, such as the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth, The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare, Matched by Ally Condie, and more. A series, on the other hand, is a collection of books having similar particular attributes — storyline and characters for example, arranged chronologically from book number one and so on. Some of the most popular series in literature includes Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, Goosebumps by R.L. Stine, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, etc.

There are also numerous trilogies and series that are currently on-progress, such as the Eloise of Westhaven series by Jean Archambault-White, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, and more. Writing this type of books is not easy because there are a lot of things to consider. If you are one of the many authors that are currently working on the next book for your series or trilogy, then you might want to check out this article. Below are some essential tips that are helpful for authors of trilogy or series books.

Come Up with Fresher Ideas

The thing with books with the same characteristics is that it is perceived to have only one theme and that is the biggest misconception for series and trilogies. It is not mandatory to have the same message and motif as the first book does because each books have different plots. That said, you as an author must think of something new to mix to the next story, which is the continuation of the first one. Look for new ideas that will better the story and bring the books to the spotlight. Do not be stagnant, be proactive instead. You may browse the internet, study your competitor’s works, evaluate the trends, conduct a run through on your previous books, etc. That said, you can offer something new to the readers and hook them more.

Maintain Relevancy

Although the plot for the following books of your series differ from each other, that does not mean that the storyline must go astray. If your trilogy or series is all about a person going on a quest, then each plot of the novels should be in line with one another. It should be all about the character’s journey and the struggles that he encounters along the way in order to finish the adventure. Relevance is definitely significant. There are a lot of cases where the first books displayed greatness, but the following ones did not give justice and dismayed the readers. Thus, in order to have a successful series or trilogy, the plot of each book must be connected and are into one goal. Yes, there are elements that needs to be tweaked or differed but the bottom line is: relevancy must be kept.

Add and/or Subtract

Do not settle for less, if you think there is an element that is lacking or a part that is too much immediately edit them. Readers are smart, meticulous, and observant. That is why you need to be mindful of your writings. Make time to proofread your manuscript by chapter or in one go. Take away those events that do not help progress the plot or add something that will make the story better. It is the best way to produce a successful and compelling story. Also, put your feet on the reader’s shoes so that you can point out what are the elements that are needed to be and not to be mixed. It is like doing the math but your variables are your words. Thus, to solve the problem, you should create a good formula and comprehensible solution.

Understanding the Nature of Killers: Are They Born or Are They Made

There is no worse thing that can outdo the gruesomeness of a murder. The hideous crime committed by a person, whether on purpose or by accident, evokes fear and other strong emotions from people. Regardless of the weight of the sin, the integrity and image that an individual has taken care for so long can vanish in a snap. In every crime scene, investigation, and trial, it is always the side of the victims that are being focused. Their cry for justice and eagerness to punish the suspect is always on the front page. However, there are always two sides of a story.

There are instances that these killers are confused with having insanity or psychopathy; however, most of them are aware of their actions and are not showing signs of psychopathy. For better understanding, here are the definition of the former and the latter:

  • Insanity

Insanity is defined as the state of being insane or mad. It is considered a mental disorder where an individual has no ability to identify fantasy from reality and is prone to irresistible impetuous behavior. People who have completely lost their sanity resulting to their commitment of a crime, in the eyes of the law, they can get away with it for they are not in their right mind and are unable to determine the right from wrong.

  • Psychopathy

Psychopathy is the condition where a person shows no remorse. Being a psychopath is innate. There are just circumstances that opened that gate to an individual’s lack of empathy and guilt. A psychopath is characterized with poor behavioral control, impulsiveness, loose sexual behavior, manipulative, shallow affect, and more.

Amidst the heat of every murder case, there are various authors and media outlets that opt to write and cover the side of the killers. There has been a good pile of well-written and fact-based articles and writings about remarkable killings of the history. The published works do not only revolve around the committed crime but also on why a completely sane person eventually become so wicked and twisted. Author Wanda Draper, for instance, and her book The Witness: Unfolding Anatomy of a Killer perfectly depict the factors that make an individual turn the murderer that he or she has become at the moment. There are also other works that delve into this type of darkness, such as Robert Keller’s Human Monsters Volume 4, Jack Rosewood’s Serial Killers The Colombian Monsters: True Crime Serial Killers, and more. One of the most popular entertainment platform, Netflix, also released shows about serial killers, such as The Confession Tapes, The Keepers, Inside the Criminal Mind, etc.

Everyone is capable of doing horrendous acts but, for killers, there are numerous reasons to pinpoint why they become one. Criminals are both born and made, there is no in between. It is innate for humans to be aggressive, but the decision to kill is formed by their minds. The idea can randomly pop up in their thoughts that leads to the generation of an uncontrollable urge to commit a murder. It can also be that an individual has been caught in the moment and was drowned to a wave of strong emotions. Some of the common causes or motives for murders are the following:

  • Revenge

“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” this is the best statement that can define revenge. People who were wronged or felt wronged have the tendency to reciprocate the actions that were done to them in the same way or worse. In psychology, acquiring a payback has something to do with the theory of reciprocity — in which a person feels obligated to answer in the same manner others have treated them. That said, revenge is a strong motive to kill because the pure idea of revenge is getting even.

  • Pleasure

Some people sin for vengeance but others kill for pleasure. These criminals are heartless and guiltless. They murder people for their own desire and fulfillment, especially serial killers. Serial killers are not emphatic, psychotic, and impulsive. The act of hearing go through so much pain or watching a person suffering and slowly dying is, for them, satisfying. There is nothing to receive in return but only gratification. Thus, most of the deaths that happened in the hands of the killers are for the pleasure and pride as well.

  • Trauma

Almost all individuals have gone through terrible experiences in their life. Murderers, however, may have encountered a worst experience in some time of their life that left a big hole in their beings. The said experience can be a deprived childhood, violent upbringing, bullying, domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and such. These events can form into a trauma that will haunt a person for a while or forever. The killers that are powered by these awful circumstances are most likely to kill people in order to escape the memories, get away with the emotions, soothe their minds, or let others experience their pain.

  • Illness

People that are insane and psychopaths, diagnosed or not, most probably transform into brutal killers. Based on the numerous cases and biographies about serial killer, almost each of them shows signs of the mentioned mental illnesses. They are very prone to administering a killing spree to victims with similar characteristics in the most wicked way possible. These killers also have natural thirst for blood and violence.

Killing, in any method, is never considered good. The vileness of brutally murdering a person regardless of the cause always has a rationale ground and is a form of injustice. Every individual, indeed, is aggressive in nature and with the unfortunate circumstances that accidentally pushed the wrong button, death is the worst consequence. Hence, to wrap it up, murderers are born but are also made by the ugly events brought by life.

Bullying and its Impact on the Lives of the Victims

Bullying, by definition, is a type of aggressive behavior which a person purposely causes discomfort or harm to others for multiple times. It is usually carried out physically or verbally. This form of behavior has a typical pattern of hurting, shaming, and threating others to show dominance or power. On that ground, the usual victims of bullying are those people that are younger, smaller, and weaker. Bullying can occur in any place and at any time if both the bully and his or her prey are present.

There are different kinds of bullying — such as physical, verbal, cyberbullying, relational, collective, and mobbing. The methods on how the bullies release their aggression also differ because it depends on the form of bullying that they are going to execute. Most cases of bullying happen in school and on various digital platform. According to National Center for Education Statistics, the average of students with ages 12 to 18 years’ who reported that they are being bullied in school within the school year is approximately 20%. Based on Pew Research Center, moreover, there is a massive amount of teenagers — about 59 percent, that are experiencing online bullying and harassment. The list goes on and the numbers get high as time passes by.

The relationship of the bully and the victim can be compared to the predator-prey relationship. The former is more dominant while the latter is less powerful; thus, the one with more power will always defeat the others. A person is not naturally born as a bully. This characteristic is not innate and it is not in the genes of a human. Bullying is a behavior with various cause and as time progressed, it grows and develops in a person. The reasons why people become bullies ranges from their experiences to their environment. Although they have experienced awful situations, it is not right to transfer those pain to innocent ones. It is like randomly throwing snow balls to a stranger in a continuous motion without any reason. The effect of bullying lives in the head of the victim for a long time and, worse, forever.

The effects of bullying to those who are being bullied include:

  • Isolation

One of the first effects of bullying to the victims is isolation. People tend to isolate themselves from others because of being abused, violated, harassed, or shamed. The idea of not belonging to the group will constantly pop up to their minds; thus, they opt to withdraw themselves from the community and be content with their own company.

  • Low self-esteem

Deflated self-esteem brings out other complex and negative emotions, such as unworthiness, unfitness, unsuitability, and futility. People that are victims of bullying are not just those who have low self-esteems but also those who possess good self-confidence. After being bullied, they tend to question their capabilities and worth resulting to lowering of their self-esteems.

  • Poor performance

In a bunch of bullied people, most of them are students while others can be adults, employees, or people with disabilities. The effect of being abused with the same person using the same method leaves a massive hole with horrifying creatures in a person’s mind. That is why most of the bullied are showing poor performance in school, work, and other things or places where they used to excel.

  • Substance Abuse

To cope up with the terror of being bullied, others choose to find comfort by using harmful substances and drinking too much alcohol. Some also opt to smoke cigarettes and pots like they are digging their own grave. Although this coping mechanism falls to the negative side for it has numerous side effects, it is one way to soothe the mind of a bullied person.

  • Suicidal Thoughts

A bullied individual is prone to overthinking and can somehow leads to the formation of suicidal thoughts. Bullying increases the act of committing suicide. The targets sometimes lose their hope and feel helpless. The amount of fear that the bully, the act of bullying, and even the thought of being bullied gives to the victim sometimes become too much to handle.

  • Mental Disorder Development

There are plenty of impact bullying can create to a person’s life. The biggest and worst effect is the development of mental disorder in a bullied individual. What makes this situation saddening is that these people did not ask and deserve it. Amongst the common disorders that these victims form are panic attacks, anxiety disorder, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These illnesses will most probably stay and worsen the lives of these people.

Sometimes, in bullying, the bully also becomes a victim but the effects on these predators are different from what the preys have experienced. The worsening case of bullying is the cause why a wide array of anti-bullying advocacy is being promoted and executed all around the globe. Bullying, indeed, makes a large effect on the minds and lives of its victims.

Olly Mead Unguarded

According to the Master of the Macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, “invisible things are the only realities.” These are the words that I believe in since I began to notice all the ugly things in the society. I was fifteen when I watched this film “Fight Club” directed by David Fincher after I’ve read the novel of Chuck Palahniuk where the movie was based on. It just screams of angst and violence. What makes it more interesting is that it can, or it already did, happen in real life. Every person is capable of doing awful things. No matter how much goodness your heart contains but when someone pushes the button, you will explode. That’s when I began to associate myself with the dark comedy, loud music, politics, sarcasm, pop culture, and anything wild. I found these things entertaining because they allow us take another view on life. Somehow, it lightens the weight of every heavy situations and issues. Dark comedy, sarcasm, pop culture, and music can somehow help people to find a silver lining in every terrible thing. Also, they can help spread awareness because they tackle things that are pretty tough, like poverty, chaos, death, justice, and more, with pinches of humor on them.

Pop culture does its best in promoting dark humor, as well as self-expression. For that reason, I started creating social media accounts. I thought that this was really a bad decision at first because I knew that most social media platforms are toxic and that is the last thing that I need in my life. As much as possible, I try to distance myself to toxicity. However, the memes and all the fun are in Facebook, Twitter, and any other related sites. When the alleged World War Three issue broke out, different platforms rumble about it – from TV networks to online sites. Memes and gifs are everywhere. Thus, making the issue appear less serious. I even made one and posted it on my page. It created a lot of laughter from people. However, when you come to think of it, the heaviness of this problem is too much that it can affect the lives of innocent people. Based on historical records, there is nothing beautiful about war. It is a luxury for the officials seated in the highest seat of each country, for it does not only cost money but also lives of innocent people.

Inside me are infinite thoughts forming into constellations. That is why I opt to create a page, aside from all the sarcasm and humor I put on social media, so that I can solely express these ideas without all the filters and the fear of being judged. Moreover, I can have the opportunity to lay down all my ideas and my take not just on pop culture and music but also on art and literature.

That said, I welcome each of you to my blog! I am Olly and I want to take everyone to all the twists, turns, and wildness of culture, society, and politics. Read on and keep updated!
